Quiz

Saturday it was the Area Quiz. After successfully answering the first question - "What do we do if we find we can't use the original venue?" - we assembled at the Crown PH, with members of B&D, Redbridge, Romford, Thurrock, Bishops Stortford, Chelmsford, and Barnet (from North Thames and Chiltern Area). Your humble blogmaster was taking part in a team called the Chelmsbridge Rock Ninjas - a cunning amalgamation of the names of the groups which comprised our team: Chelmsford, Redbridge, Thurrock, and the Iga Ninja Clan. Our stealth tactics managed to take us to within one point of winning - that honour however went to Barnet.

Our Disco

On Saturday 3rd, Havering and Romford held a successful joint disco at Havering's venue, Clubs 2004. It was on the theme of "Doctor Who", and music was provided by DJs Lee Gilbert and Sanya Preston. We were pleased to see the room packed full of Plussers - especially large contingents from Kings Lynn and Barnet. We even welcomed three Plussers all the way from Midlands Area!

Happy New Year to everyone, from Havering Plus!

We rocked in the New Year. Your Humble Blogmaster went, with other Plussers, to the Cauliflower in Ilford to see our perennial favourite band, East of Java. This was not particularly easy, as there was some serious trouble on the trains that evening: one line had industrial action, the other was affected by a fallen tree. I therefore had to take a convoluted route involving a rail-replacement bus from Shenfield, a fast-train to Liverpool Street and then a normal train back to Seven Kings (nearest station to the Cauliflower). Eventually however I arrived, and just in time.

The place was in a party mood, and the band were awarding prizes to members of the audience. I even got up on stage at one point (at the band's invitation, obviously) to sing backing vocals on "Highway to Hell" - for which I was rewarded with a bottle of Jack Daniels! This is ironic since the last time I got up on stage to sing "Highway to Hell" (at Wash 2005) I really murdered the song. I checked with friends in the audience and they (politely) said they couldn't really hear me. I therefore attribute the fact that I won such screaming adulation - especially from the female members of the audience! - to the fact that I was by far the best looking person that they had up to do backing vocals!

WASH 2006

This weekend, members of Havering Plus went to Hunstanton in Norfolk for WASH, the annual National Plus Holiday. There were five Havering members there, as well as over 250 other Plussers from all over the country. There were live bands, Comedy, a Firework display, our own private Cinema screening, Karaoke, the WASH quiz, as well as the opportunity to go swimming and take part in other sports. Havering stayed in luxury Chalet accomodation. Our thanks to Keith Israel, the organiser, and all of the WASH committee. We intend to return in 2007.

New Members Evening

Thursday was a special evening for new members, and we were glad to welcome back two Havering members who had not been to the club in a long time. Thanks too to Barking & Dagenham Plus, who came to visit us and helped swell the numbers.

RGT Bowling

Havering Plus took part in the RGT Bowling Tournament today, organised by EAA Area Plus. Two members of Havering did exceptionally well: Lee Gilbert, Treasurer, got the highest score for an individual game (141); while Joe Gurney, Secretary, had the highest average score for the whole afternoon.

Training Day

Members of Havering attended the Area Training Day today. This was organised by East Anglia Area, and is meant specifically to assist Plus members who are keen to help run the organisation. It is also a great way to meet people - the training day was attended by Plussers from as far afield as Didcot in Oxfordshire, and Huddersfield (W Yorks)!

Canvey Crawl

Yours truly was traipsing around Canvey Island today with a load of members of Barking & Dagenham Plus, helping to raise money for Macmillan Nurses via a sponsored walk. This was in memory of Adrian Pembroke RIP, who was until his untimely death from cancer a B&D member. The event was very successful as the twenty or so participants between them raised over £900 in sponsorship.

Chelmsford

On Wednesday, members of Havering Plus visited a brand new Plus group in Chelmsford, on the occasion of its grand opening night. Indeed, Lee Gilbert - who formerly served as our Treasurer, has been instrumental in opening Chelmsford Plus. This will be an exciting time for Plus, as with more groups opening that means more Plus members to socialise with. So well done Lee, and keep up the good work!

Barkingside Party

Braving almost non-existent public transport in the north-east London area, members of Havering went to Chigwell's Metropolitan Police Club, to attend Barkingside Plus' Party. There were members other Plus groups there, from all over Essex, East Anglia and London: Barnet, Brentwood, Barkingside (obviously!), Barking & Dagenham, ourselves, Kings Lynn, Redbridge and Romford. Yours truly didn't fancy trying to get back to civilisation from darkest Chigwell at the end of the night, so I was lucky to get a lift from fellow Plussers.
